Rizal Tanjung is an artist and cultural figure born in Padang on February 5, 1959. He has dedicated his life to the arts since 1975, starting with his education at the Indonesian School of Fine Arts (SSRI) in Padang. His artistic journey led him to establish Teater Moeka in 1979, which later evolved into Old Track Teater in 2004.
As a key figure in the development of the arts in West Sumatra, Rizal Tanjung has directed 63 theater performances across Indonesia. He is also an active writer in local and national media, producing scripts, short stories, serialized fiction, poetry, cultural articles, and academic papers on traditional, modern, and contemporary arts. Some of his notable works include Sandiwara Sandiwara, Minus I, Melody, Kaco Batuang, Harimau Agam di Negeri Cina, Trilogi Asal Usul Danau Maninjau, and Ruang Hampa.
In the organizational sphere, Rizal Tanjung has held several leadership positions, including Chairman of Teater Moeka Padang, Chairman of the Old Track Arts Institute, Chairman of the Sekapur Sirih Educational Institute, and Chairman of the Traditional Media Communication Forum (FK-METRA) in Padang. He has also served on the boards of the West Sumatra Arts Council and the Padang Arts Council, as well as being actively involved in the Bumi Kebudayaan Institute.
Beyond the stage, he has contributed as an arts observer, jury member, speaker, and curator for various governmental institutions, such as the Department of Tourism, Department of Education, Department of Culture, Department of Communications and Information Technology, Cultural Park UPTD, and universities in West Sumatra. His role as a curator at the Cultural Heritage Conservation Center (BPK) further highlights his dedication to preserving and developing local culture.
Through his unwavering commitment and contributions, Rizal Tanjung has become a prominent figure in the artistic and cultural landscape of West Sumatra, continuously striving to sustain traditions through creative works and intellectual thought.
